Green Reincarnation
6.2022
This project designed a future where people coexist with forest with no existence of forest greenwashing by companies. Nowadays, it is easy to find greenwashing advertisements everywhere. In this project, I especially focused on the Old-growth forest greenwashing and designed land uses and the building at the Yakushima Island.

Post - "Forest Greenwashing"

Research
Many people claim not to cut down trees for a sustainable future, and which seems sustainable at a glance. However, these are actually greenwashing.
Japan stops cutting down trees since 1945 and currently, there are many overcrowded old-growth forests in Japan. This results in blocking sunlight to the ground making young trees difficult to grow, land sliding and more CO2 emitted from the dead trees and wildfire.
Japan forest already shows that this solution is not the best for both forests and humans.
Concept
As of post – “forest greenwashing”, I designed to separate the island into 3 areas. The red zone is an old-growth forest protection area. The settlement area is surrounding the protection area like the greenbelt.
In the settlement area, people coexist with the forest and appropriately control the area with the slow speed of the forest lifecycle, by cutting some of the trees to make enough spaces for young trees to grow.
