Italy Exchange Program Project 2

Project For sending 3 postcards to Melbourne

For this project, I bought 3 of the same postcards that I found in Milan. On The first postcard “The City”, I wrote my thoughts before visiting Milan and how it changed after I actually visit. For the second postcard “Your City”, I created a collage on the postcard using the photographs that I took in Milan such as signboards, books and buildings. And for the third one, I created a puzzle on the original postcards using illustrations of rubbish and photographs of tourists from a local magazine that I bought in Milan.

The City

When I decided to travel in Italy, the first thing came in my mind was the famous historical buildings and the art museums. I was really looking forward to visiting these places, but at the same time I worried about the crowds of people, noise, and also pickpocketing.

However, this image has been quickly changed. Although there are many places with crowded people, once I walked into small bypath there are lots of beautiful places and buildings existing in the silence.

Your City

In Milan, I spent more time exploring small and hidden streets and back lanes rather than visiting famous places. As I mentioned in the first postcard, I feel a little uncomfortable in the crowded and noisy place. Therefore, I rather preferred to walk through the quiet lanes and focus fully on the surrounding buildings and sceneries.

Surrounded by tall buildings interacting with each other complexly, I feel calm and protected. The tall buildings hide me from everything and create a private space but not a closed space. It is still open as you can see the sky and a lane connecting somewhere.

I covered the buildings on the postcard with the signboard and wall cover of the places I visited in Milan.

Ad absurdum

For the third postcard, I created the puzzle. There are an illustration of rubbishes and pictures of tourists on each piece of the puzzle. As building up the puzzle on the background of the Milan Duomo’s illustration of the postcard, the piece of rubbishes ad tourists gradually covered up the Duomo view. From this puzzle, I tired to express the crowded people and rubbishes everywhere ruined the beautiful view of the historical buildings. I was surprised and impressed by the magnificent view and design of the Duomo, but at the same time, I saw there are many rubbishes and people blocking the view of the Duomo.
