Steaming Eidetic Memory in My Mirror

04.2021

“Steaming Eidetic memory in my mirror”, is an installation I created in my bathroom. The installation used steam and wind which is created naturally in the bathroom.  The main concept of the installation is that the drawings on the mirrors magically appears by the steam created in the site. This happens because the drawing is drawn using soap on the mirrors. When you take shower, you can easily notice that the mirror in the bathroom becomes fogged. I used this everyday life event as my installation.

The installation has very slow and gradual change. However, the drawing disappeared again quickly after the steam gone so the installation is very ephemeral.

In the "In Praise of shadows" by Junichiro Tanizaki (Japanese Author), he mentions the beauty of Japanese dim lighting and darkness which also created a great effect on my installation to express the atmosphere and the steam movement.
I am surprised that I used these elements unconsciously, which may indicate that I’m also having the traditional sense of the Japanese beauty of shadows and the darkness.
